About New York City:
Manhattan can be dated all the way back to year 1612. At that time, it was occupied by the American Indian called "Mohegan." They called this island "Manhata," means... "Small hills." Manhattan used to have 500 hills back in 1600. But men changed the name because it is very feminine, they just twisted the pronunciation around into more masculine tune, and become "Manhattan."
Then the Dutch came over and paid equal to $24 US dollar and bought this Island. Changed the name into "New Territory outside of Amsterdam," this is why the island was called "New Amsterdam" for awhile. Then the British came over and took over this island, then the name changed to "New Territory for the York" (name after the Duke family name of the time), this is why now is called, "New York."
Manhattan wanted to become a city at the year 1889, but not enough residents (you need to have one million residents in order to become a city), so Manhattan combined Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queen and Bronx county. In order to reach one million to become a city, this is why New York City has 5 broroughs.
The population in Manhattan is 6 million, New York City... 8.1 million.
Why we pick the New York City?
